Course Overview

    This course provides Safety Officers, Supervisors, and Managers working in South African industries with a comprehensive and practical introduction to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act). Learners will explore the historical development, structure, and key provisions of the Act, including recent legislative updates and amendments.

    With a strong focus on real-world application, the course empowers learners to understand their legal responsibilities, interpret regulatory requirements correctly, and actively contribute to the creation of safe, healthy, and compliant workplaces. By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to support effective health and safety management systems that align with current South African legislation and best practice.


    Course Objectives

    By successfully completing this course, learners will be able to:

    • Understand the legislative journey and purpose of the Occupational Health and Safety Act in South Africa.

    • Identify the role and responsibilities of the Department of Employment and Labour (DoEL) as custodians of the OHS Act.

    • Recognise and interpret the key sections of the OHS Act and their implications for both employers and employees.

    • Summarise the “New Generation” OHS Regulations introduced in 2024/2025 and their impact on workplaces.

    • Explain the requirements of the Physical Agents Regulations in promoting workplace safety.

    • Differentiate between the previous and updated Noise Exposure Regulations.

    • Assess amendments made to the General Safety Regulations aimed at improving safety standards.

    • Understand the administrative duties, inspection powers, and enforcement rights of DoEL inspectors.

    • Identify non-compliance penalties under the OHS Act and their implications for organisations.
